I think things like the ability to tune your guitar is just something
you pick up as you gain experience on your instrument. Learn as much
as you can and play as much as you can and your ear should develop.

One thing that I've seen that I think can impede someone's progress is
if they depend too much on other people to show them what to do.
Taking lessons is a good thing, but if you never think for yourself
you're not going to get anywhere. I think people who are really
interested in playing will find themselves tinkering around and
experimenting whether there's a teacher there or not. That shows they
have the passion to play. They may try to learn songs off of a record
instead of waiting for a teacher to show them, for example. At some
point a player has to stand on their own.
