That's a nice website. Thanks. I've been trying to play the blues for
about 2 1/2 years now. One thing I have noticed is that blues is a lot
tougher to play than classic rock. I have been through the music
lessons thing with other forms, and it never worked for me, although I
guess I can sing some things OK. Working on things I like has taken me
a lot further in 2.5 years than any lessons would have. I have found
that it is really tough to learn the scales for memory and then try to
play from memory. I have to learn the piece well enough to play it in
my sleep, and then I can improvise and make it my own.

It just takes a long time to be able to move your fingers around the
fretboard and the strings the way your mind wants to. I have listened
to enough blues over the years that I do have in my head the way I
want the piece to sound, and I work to make it sound that way. It
would be nice to have someone show me things when I find things that
are hard to understand, but I have yet to find anyone who really wants
to do this, so I figure it out for myself, for better or for worse.
Instructors always want me to follow some program, at least in my
experience, and I have no interest in doing what the instructor wants;
I'd prefer the instructor tell me what I want to know. Apparently I
have a bad attitude!

As for the original post, I don't know if there is anything easy with
respect to blues mucis. Simpler songs require a lot more feel. No way
I can perform Baby Please Don't go like Mississippi Fred McDowell, or
Muddy Waters, or Buddy Guy/Jr Wells, but I can play it all day long!
Unfortunately I don't have the soul to really make a song like that
work. Of course I could play the classic rock version, which gets more
into banging on power chords and using distortion...but that's just
not what I want. I can make Hideaway work, but it's a lot tougher to
play.

Magic Slim says the way he learned to play blues guitar was taking the
guitar and himself into a place by himself and figured out how to make
the guitar make the sounds he needed to make. In the end I don't know
if there is really any way around that!
