Subject: Pickup noise question...

While swapping P90s yesterday I was wondering....

I've read that the outer winding of the coils are generally connected to hot and
the inner ones to ground. Seems to me you'd want to make the outer coils ground
to shield the inner coils. UNLESS - doing so would also shield the coil from the
magnetic field variations from the string it needs to work.

Do the coils pick up signal primarily from the top, from the polepieces, or from
the field surrounding the coils? I had always thought it was a combination of
all but mostly thru the polescrews or magnets.
